In the 17th century, scissors were typically made from forged iron or steel, often hand-crafted by blacksmiths or specialised metalworkers. Therefore were precious personal items which needed to be cared for. Written evidence strongly suggests they were sometimes hung from waist belts—a popular 17th-century habit. Period inventories and household accounts sometimes list sewing tools stored “at the waist” or “on the belt”. Moreover the Rijksmuseum Digital Collection  contains some portraits showing pouches or chords at the waist, which the curators interpret as sewing tools holders due to their essential yet portable nature. Additionally, users would often carry them in protective cases to preserve the sharp edges.

The addition of the linen hanging chord on this leather snips case allows for ease of attaching to the waist by simply sliding the belt through, ensuring the snips are handy whilst working on a sewing project.
