In the 16th and 17th centuries, grosgrain, while not always referred to by that name, was widely used in European clothing as a sturdy, decorative ribbon or trim. Woven with pronounced horizontal ribs, this type of narrow-ware served both structural and aesthetic functions. It edged garments like doublets, jerkins, gowns, and caps, reinforcing seams and adding visual detail. In noble and courtly fashion, artisans often crafted ribbed braids and tapes from silk. They also used linen for its structural integrity and embellished it with metallic threads to display status. Tailors used them for fastening points, lacing reinforcement. Particularly  of note are the Spanish and Habsburg-influenced styles of the period. Although texts didn’t consistently use the word “grosgrain” until later, craftsmen had already well established the ribbed weave style it describes, making it an authentic detail for historically accurate garment construction in these centuries.
