The Extant Partlet:
This fine linen partlet is based on the 1630-1640 extant partlet in Platt Hall.
Social History:
For women of the 17th century, partlets were essential layering garments that blended function with subtle social signaling. Typically worn over the bodies and under the gown, they served as a modesty layer while highlighting a woman’s skill in needlework or her household’s access to fine linen. In reenactment, partlets can indicate class and regional variation: a plain linen partlet suits a working or middling-class portrayal, while a finely embroidered or spangled version might suit a wealthier persona.
